Weecheetowin Support Services (WSS), previously known as the Ontario Indian Residential School Support Services (OIRSSS), is dedicated to promoting mental wellness and cultural support for Residential School Survivors, Indian Day School students, and the families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
Weecheetowin, meaning “working together,” reflects WSS’s commitment to collaboration in providing comprehensive support to those in need.
Programs Offered by WSS
1. Resolution Health Support Program
This program assists Residential School Survivors and their families, facilitating gatherings to honor the Missing and Unmarked Graves of Indigenous Residential School children.
2. Cultural Support Provider Program
The Cultural Support Provider Program ensures that the cultural needs of Residential School Survivors and their families are met, providing vital resources and assistance.
3. Indian Day School (IDS) Survivors Program
This program addresses and supports the mental health concerns of Indian Day School survivors and their families. It also assists families in navigating the Federal Indian Day School Settlement Agreement process.
4. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG)
The MMIWG program offers support to families impacted by the loss of a loved one who is missing or has been murdered, helping them through difficult times.
Additional Health and Cultural Support Services
Weecheetowin Support Services provides a variety of additional health and cultural support services, including:
- Support for families attending court and family hearings
- Health support at commemorative events
- Assistance during virtual meetings, gatherings, and events
- Community outreach to educate organizations and individuals about available services
