Breton House: A Dedicated Rehabilitation Center for Women
Addressing Substance Use Disorders
Breton House, located at 91 Breton Road in Sault Ste. Marie, is a dedicated rehabilitation center that supports women on their journey to recovery from substance use disorders (SUD), including alcohol, stimulants, opiates, cannabis, and hallucinogens.
The center’s history dates back to the early 1980s, originating from a local chapter of Women for Sobriety. With a vision to create a safe and supportive recovery home for women, Breton House was established with the help of Judge Raymond Stortini’s 1983 report and support from the local community.
A Community-Driven Mission
Breton House is a non-profit organization funded by:
- The Ministry of Health for operational costs.
- Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation through mortgage interest subsidies.
- The United Way of Sault Ste. Marie, ensuring adequate staffing.
Residents receive financial assistance under the General Welfare Act, offering accessible treatment and rehabilitation services.
A Safe Haven for Recovery
Since welcoming its first residents on April 27, 1986, Breton House has been a symbol of hope for women battling chemical dependency. The facility provides opportunities for personal growth and lasting change, helping residents recover from the effects of addiction to alcohol and drugs.
Governance and Leadership
Breton House operates under the guidance of a volunteer board of directors representative of the community. The board sets policies to govern the rehabilitation programs, while professional staff implement these policies, ensuring women receive the care and support they need.
